Confidentia Ancedotes – June 2019

Posted on June 28, 2019

June 28, 2019

Greetings from the Confidentia Shrine,

And welcome back to ordinary time! That’s how the season after Pentecost to the Sunday of Christ, the King is called in the Liturgical Year. In the secular world, much of this period is vacation time, a season to get away from day-to-day chores and to devote time specifically to relaxation. This can involve travel or a stay-at-home vacation, nowadays called a staycation. Whatever you do, please also feel free to include a refueling of your soul by visiting the Confidentia Shrine during its jubilee year.

In numerous stories and poems of her new publication Kate Otto’s Legacy – Daily Life for a Schoenstatt Mother, the author gives witness to the transformative power of the Confidentia Shrine in her life. The booklet is available in our gift shop.

We are happy to host camps for young women, high school students, and younger girls during June and are grateful to the moms who accompany their daughters and volunteer as chaperones. Please pray for the success of these vacation days in the shadow of the shrine.

It’s also high time to share with you more details about the celebration planned for the 60th anniversary of the Confidentia Shrine on Saturday, October 19, 2019. We will begin around 11 am and close with a Holy Mass of Thanksgiving at 4 pm officiated by Bishop Mulvey of Corpus Christi. Please save the date and invite your family and friends to this Shrine Festival which includes a BBQ lunch, games, talks, info booths as well as the possibility to visit our MTA in the shrine and thank her for the past 60 years of blessings.

Wishing you a happy and rejuvenating vacation,

Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary

Confidentia Ancedotes – May 2019

Greetings from the Confidentia Shrine!

“Bring flowers to the fairest, bring flowers to the rarest …!” With this and similar songs in honor of the Queen of May we offer our love to the Blessed Mother during these thirty-one days of grace. Devoting one month of the year to the Blessed Mother is a universal custom of the Catholic Church. In Schoenstatt it has taken on a unique character through the ‘May blossoms’ with which Joseph Engling strove to prove his love to the MTA. His longing was to prepare a bouquet of flowers for her as lovely as the loveliest blossoms of spring! Above all, he desired to turn his soul into a beautiful garden of Mary!

How did he do it? He made a plan: Every day he wanted to bring Our Lady roses, the symbol of love and esteem, by acts of surrender to her; by increasing her honor; by reading about her, and by making efforts to speak of her. Likewise, he collected forget-me-not of faithfulness in your service by fulfilling his duties as perfectly as possible. The violet of humility and modesty inspired him to honor the Queen of May by accepting corrections patiently, forgiving offenses, and obeying cheerfully. Last but not least, he collected lilies of purity by guarding his senses, by fostering silence, and praying for purity before Holy Communion. In a single month, the thirty-one days of May 1916, Joseph Engling was able to collect 1712 May blossoms for the Queen of his heart!

Many of us will have the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to the Confidentia Shrine during May. How many May blossoms will you bring to our Schoenstatt Queen? Let us unite in noble competition to honor her with many signs of love and devotion in gratitude for her faithfulness from her shrine during the past sixty years.

We are looking forward to welcoming you,

Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary

Confidentia Ancedotes – April 2019

Posted on June 28, 2019

April 15, 2019

Greetings from the Confidentia Shrine,

We are in the middle of Holy Week! It began on Palm Sunday when Jesus upon his entry to Jerusalem was hailed by an overjoyed crowd crying “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” (Mt 21:9) Within five days, the scene changed dramatically. The same crowd cried out, “Crucify him!” (Mk 15:13). What happened? Why the sudden deviation in the people’s relationship to Jesus?

Father Kentenich tells us what we know and may have painfully experienced already: “Those who praise us today, will crucify us tomorrow.” How devastating peer pressure can be. How unfree it can make us, sometimes even without us being aware of it. The individual characters Jesus encounters during his last week before his death also tell us a story. Most of his friends, including the twelve, abandoned him mostly out of fear. Very few persevered beneath the cross. And we have to ask ourselves, where do I stand?

The paschal mystery which we are about to celebrate, invites us to become Easter people. We are to become deeply supernatural persons after the example of the Blessed Mother, who even under the cross, at the darkest moment, believed confidently that suffering and death are not the end. There is a whole new dimension of life and reality that lies beyond Good Friday that becomes a never-ending source of hope and confidence for us.

If the walls of our Confidentia Shrine could speak, we would know of the countless experiences of inner transformation that have been worked through the transforming grace mediated by our covenant queen over the past sixty years. One stands for many others. The parents of a young man from the Valley who faced some jail time were deeply distraught. They and their friends prayed continuously for the conversion of the youth. Without his parents’ knowledge this young man found his way to the Confidentia Shrine where he prayed for a long time. He returned home a changed person telling all who wanted to hear it: the Blessed Mother has embraced me, and I will change. And he did, to this day!

May we all experience the loving embrace of our Confidentia Queen and become Easter people,

The Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary

News January 2019

Posted on January 15, 2019

Greetings from the Confidentia Shrine!

A new year has begun; 365 days, 8760 hours, lay ahead of us. Each one a gift from God! Incredible, how much time we are given at our disposal! The question is, how are we going to invest it!?

Compared to the pioneer sisters who set out 70 years ago from South Africa and Germany by boat to venture to Corpus Christi, Texas, without any precise pre-knowledge of how long this journey would take them, we nowadays can travel virtually anywhere in the world within a few hours or a day. With minimal cost, we can instantly talk with people on the other side of the world. Nearly any question or problem can be solved promptly by searching the internet, instead of poring over a dictionary. But do we have gained more time through the convenience of our gadgets? Are we more relaxed and at peace due to the security our smart phone can offer us?

Yes and No! In theory, the conveniences of our age make our lives much easier and less time consuming. For example, we don’t have to wait anymore for a letter which takes at least a few days to arrive in our mail box. Now emails and text messages flood our inbox constantly and we feel obliged to respond immediately. As a consequence, many of us feel hounded, stressed out, and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things we “have” to do!? And here we need to stop and realize that this phenomenon /symptom of ‘having to be available 24/7 is actually a consequence of being free! Because we are free to use the time given to us, can we overbook ourselves or enjoy each moment as an opportunity to be in the service of the One who gave us this gift in the first place.

Freedom, understood correctly, is an important aspect of Schoenstatt’s school of self-education. Already in the Pre-founding Document of 1912 Father Kentenich introduced this program of self-education to the sodalists: “Under the protection of Mary we want to learn to educate ourselves to become firm, free, priestly personalities.”

Freedom is also the trademark of the Apostolic Federation of Schoenstatt whose centennial we celebrate this year. We may recall, that during World War I other men who did not belong to the Schoenstatt Minor Seminary had joined the extension of Schoenstatt. In August of 1919 the leaders of this external organization met in Hoerde, a small town north of Schoenstatt. This meeting culminated in the creation of the Apostolic Federation, a community with its own structure and principles based on freedom in order to express a maximum of magnanimity in striving for Christian perfection. In Texas we have Federation Families and Federation Mothers.  Maybe you could invite a federation member to your home or group to inquire more.

In a few days we will commemorate the Second Milestone of Schoenstatt’s history. While imprisoned in Koblenz, Father Kentenich struggled during the night from January 19 to the 20 in prayer. He felt the urgent need to secure the inner freedom of the Schoenstatt Family so that it would prosper even in times of extreme fear and distress as for example during the dictatorship of Hitler. By not choosing the way of exterior freedom and accepting the exterior chains of the Dachau concentration camp, he clearly indicated to us the high value of interior freedom, anchored in “the reality of the supernatural.” In view of the gift of time, we may want to ask ourselves to what degree we are free of the ‘bondage’ of the media? Do they perhaps subtly deprive us of the time we intended to spend in prayer or for the apostolate?

60 years ago, the first Shrine on Texan soil was dedicated here in Lamar. Divine Providence has led us to understand that its mission is Confidence. Please watch for our regular Confidentia Blurbs on this website! We are grateful that we are able to invite you again this year to retreats, workshops, and pilgrimages to the Confidentia Shrine. Please check the calendar posted on our webpage and feel free to register!

Looking forward to welcoming you all,

August 25, 2018

First of all we want to thank each of you for your continuous interest, concern and support for us as community and for our shrine and center.

We can thank the Triune God and our dear Mother Thrice Admirable Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt for their constant protection and guidance in this time of re-construction.

Through your concern and continuous support during this time marked with special challenges, we have experienced God´s mercy and the reality of the Covenant of Love. And for this

we want to extend our gratitude to everyone.

As we all know it is already one year since Hurricane Harvey hit our place leaving us with much devastation and destruction. During the past months we have been able to accomplish a lot through your help and assistance. Our property already looks clean and beautiful. We have lost many trees and consequently do not have as much shade anymore but we are very blessed to have our Shrine and Fr. Kentenich Statue standing, as well as our large houses. No doubt, the Blessed Mother has an essential mission from this Shrine, our Confidentia Shrine.

Of course, you also want to know more about the houses. Many people are asking how things are going and when we will be open again for retreats, events, etc. Without question we have made some progress but not at the pace we would have liked. Things are moving slowly due to lack of personnel and due to many challenges that come in between. After the hurricane we started immediately to re-build the Training Center, House Schoenstatt and the Girls´ house. House Schoenstatt is an older structure and has sustained much more damage. For this reason the process is taking much longer.

The present situation is a very challenging one since everyone in Rockport, Aransas Pass, etc. is trying to rebuild their homes and businesses. In a recent article of the diocesan magazine it said that in the area of Rockport/Fulton, approximately 16,000 homes were either severely damaged or destroyed, and at this point, one year after the hurricane, 12,000 of these are still in need of repair, and many people are still without adequate housing. Workers are overtaxed and they are in demand everywhere. As you all know, when one is going to remodel a house one plans ahead of time and looks for the pros and cons as to how to do it. This planning gives time to look for options and for solving issues that have been a problem. One of our great challenges is that we have to plan and to rebuild at the same time, trying to find solutions to problems that were in the houses already before. Besides this, it is hard to receive information from companies or to get them to come or get the materials we need in a short period of time. Another challenge is that we have discovered many other hidden damages from the hurricane, that are seen only as time passes, such as uncontrolled humidity, leaks, crucial problems with windows, A.C., etc. The consequence of this is constant delays.

At the same time we had a few events that have brought more damage to our houses:

  • Tornado winds in March brought a lot of water into some houses, and we had to demolish some areas and re-do some of the work in the girls´ house
  • Water leaks in March and again in August in House Schoenstatt have caused us to have to do more demolition and re-do sheet rock work.
  • Flooding in the Training Center due to an AC problem
  • Rain for almost 3 days in June that caused much damage in some houses

Even though the rain caused more damage, we can say it was also a blessing since we were able to see more issues that need to be addressed. These things can help us better understand the situation and are an invitation for you to continue supporting us with your prayer and patience.

We have the confidence that all this is in Our Lord´s hands and he has a plan for us, for our center and for the Schoenstatt Family as such. At the same time we can also realize that in this process we have never been alone. We have been very blessed, first of all, with Our Lord´s and the Blessed Mother´s guidance and protection and, secondly with each and every one of you. In this spirit of gratitude we want to announce to you that we will have a

Holy Mass in Thanksgiving
to our Mother Thrice Admirable Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt
for her protection, for enabling us to re-build our houses,
and for all your help and support in this process after the hurricane.

The Most Reverend Bishop Michael Mulvey
will celebrate this Holy Mass on
December 8, 2018.

We will begin at 2:00 pm in the Training Center
with a time of sharing and a video about the re-building process.
We will continue with the Holy Mass followed directly by a procession to the Shrine.

Dinner will then be served.

Please SAVE THE DATE and join us!

For this occasion, we want to compile pictures of all the volunteers and benefactors who have been here at our place. We would be very grateful if you could send us some pictures of when you came to volunteer. You can send hard copies to
Sr. M. Lorena Segura

Now, the update of our houses:

THE SHRINE

The roof and the interior are finished, it already looks beautiful! We still need to do the exterior paint job! We hope to give the gift of the finished Shrine to our dear Blessed Mother for her feast day on December 8.

HOUSE SCHOENSTATT

The two sections, the Sisters´ wing and the Father wing which had the most damage, are under construction. The roof is finished and some of the interior work has been done. We are waiting for the installation of the new windows in order to continue the work on the interior. The middle section, that had been remodeled three years ago, also needs some repairs. Most of the sisters have moved to the Training Center so that this work can be done. After all the interior work is completed, we will proceed with the painting of the exterior.

TRAINING CENTER

The inside work has been completed and we can joyfully share with you that we have already opened this place for pilgrimages. The Auditorium has its full capacity again and the bedrooms are now finished and occupied by the sisters. The Father room has also been finished and is again open. Some spaces are still used for storage. We still have some exterior painting to do and other outside repairs that will be done later.

GIRLS’ HOUSE – now called STELLA MARIS HOUSE

As most of you know Mel and Cathy Garten took over the responsibility to complete and direct this project–not only the construction work but the interior design as well. It is a beautiful house! We thank them, and all volunteers and benefactors who made this “dream” possible. We can joyfully share with you that we have already used the house for some groups. But, after a heavy rain storm, we realized that we have to change the windows, so we are now in this process and hope to complete it soon.

HOUSE CONFIDENTIA (former Province House)

Since we are concentrating all our strength and efforts on the other houses, the work on House Confidentia has been minimal. As some of you know, this house had extensive damage; therefore we are only trying basically to keep it dry and safe from more damage. Currently we are working on the roof and hope to install the new windows soon. In the meantime we are also in the process of discerning how to best use this house in the future. In view of all this, we plan to do some remodeling. The restoration of this house will take a long time since we intend to finish all the repairs on the other houses first, so we can open them for you.

As you know, the GIFT SHOP is back and has been up and running for some time.

On behalf of all the sisters, I want to say once more a

Sincere Thanks.

for all your help through your prayers, or hours of work at our place, your interest, encouragement, support, generous financial or material donations, visits to our place, etc. The contribution of each one is helping us to restore everything, including the cemetery!!! There is still much work to do, but our dear Mother Thrice Admirable will show us the best time to continue with each project. We do not know when we will be able to open the doors of our retreat center again, but we are confident that it will be soon. We will keep you posted. Thank you also for your patience and understanding!

At this time, we have space for day groups only. For more information for the use of the house please contact the new administrator of our retreat center: Sr. M. Jacinta Brunner by email: houseschoenstattlamar@gmail.com or by cell phone: 361-695-0677.

We ask you for your continuous prayers for all people in our restoration team: engineers, architects, contractors and all other workers, that they may be guided to do what is most beneficial for each house.

In gratitude we also include you in our prayers in the Shrine and ask our dear Mother Thrice Admirable Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt to reward you and your families abundantly.

In the Covenant of Love, sincerely

Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary
